Generac (Generac Holdings Inc.) is an American manufacturer of backup and portable power sources: gasoline, diesel, and gas generators, automatic transfer switch systems, and energy storage solutions for the residential, light commercial, and industrial sectors.
The company was founded by Robert Kern in 1959 and initially made portable generators for Sears under the Craftsman brand. In the 1980s, Generac expanded into the commercial and industrial markets, and in 1989 it introduced the first automatic gas-fueled home backup power system. In 2006 the company was acquired by the private equity firm CCMP Capital, and on February 11, 2010, Generac Holdings held its IPO on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker GNRC. Today it is one of the largest manufacturers of backup power systems, ranging in output from 800 W to 9 MW.
