JBL Professional is the professional audio division of the JBL brand (Harman/Samsung), one of the world's leading manufacturers of sound reinforcement systems for rental, concerts, and installations. It produces line arrays, subwoofers, stage and studio monitors, and cinema and installation loudspeakers for tours, festivals, and venues.
The company was founded in 1946 by American acoustics engineer James Bullough Lansing, whose initials gave the brand its name; it was originally called Lansing Sound, then James B. Lansing Sound. After the founder's death in 1949, Bill Thomas took over as head of the company, ushering in a period of rapid growth. In 1969, JBL became part of Jervis Corporation (later Harman International), and its professional division became part of Harman Professional Solutions alongside AKG, Crown, dbx, Soundcraft, and others. Since 2017, Harman (and thus JBL Professional) has been a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. Key milestones for the professional division include concert and cinema sound systems, the VerTec and VTX line array series (featuring the proprietary D2 dual-diaphragm driver), and the discontinuation of the flagship VTX A-Series in 2022.
